The Minnesota Orchestra During Better Times, Orchestra Hall, Minneapolis, 1974
The musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra went on strike on September 26, 1979, in a dispute over pay and vacation time. It was the first players’ strike in the orchestra’s 76-year history and it delayed the debut of new conductor Neville Marriner. The 1979 strike lasted five days—approximately 360 days fewer than the current management lockout, which has put the orchestra’s future at risk.
